The Inauguration of China
On Wednesday 3 November, HM The Queen and His Excellency Mr Hu Jintao, the President of the People’s Republic of China and Madame Liu Yongqing will officially open and tour the new exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts — China: The Three Emperors, 1662—1795 which is sponsored by Goldman Sachs.
The inauguration forms part of an official state visit by His Excellency Hu Jintao and Madame Liu Yongqing as the guests of Her Majesty The Queen, from 8—10 November 2005.
The Royal Academy’s landmark exhibition, China: The Three Emperors, 1662–1795, presents imperial treasures of the Qing dynasty. Drawn largely from the remarkable collections of the Palace Museum, Beijing, it focuses on the artistic and cultural riches of the three most powerful emperors of China’s last dynasty: The Kangxi Emperor (1662—1722), The Yongzheng Emperor (1723—35) and The Qianlong Emperor (1736—95). Some 400 works include such treasures as paintings and painted scrolls, jades and bronzes, porcelain and lacquer ware, precious robes, palace furnishings, scientific instruments, weapons and ceremonial armour. Many of these unique objects have never been shown outside China and will be exhibited for five months from November 2005 to April 2006.
China: The Three Emperors, 1662—1795, sponsored by Goldman Sachs, continues the Royal Academy’s tradition of hosting blockbuster exhibitions devoted to world cultures. The exhibition is curated by Professor Dame Jessica Rawson, Warden of Merton College, Oxford; Alfreda Murck, Adjunct Professor of History, Peking University; Regina Krahl, independent art historian; Hiromi Kinoshita, Somerville College, Oxford; and Cecilia Treves, Exhibitions Curator at the Royal Academy.
